But, filing for bankruptcy doesn\u2019t discharge all types of debts.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Bankruptcy Code specifies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscourts.gov\/services-forms\/bankruptcy\/bankruptcy-basics\/discharge-bankruptcy-bankruptcy-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">19 categories of debts that can\u2019t be discharged<\/a> for Chapters 7, 11, and 12. Chapter 13 bankruptcy has a more limited list.<\/p>\n<h2>Common types of non-dischargeable debts<\/h2>\n<p>That said, the most common types of non-dischargeable debts include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Child support and alimony<\/li>\n<li>Willful and malicious injury to property or another person<\/li>\n<li>Some types of unpaid taxes like tax liens<\/li>\n<li>Income taxes within the last three years (and sometimes longer)<\/li>\n<li>Personal injury or death caused by the debtor using a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or other substances<\/li>\n<li>Those not listed in your bankruptcy filing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Federal student loans are difficult to resolve through bankruptcy, but <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/manage-loans\/forgiveness-cancellation\/bankruptcy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sometimes can be discharged<\/a>, although you\u2019ll have to file a separate action.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\".\/what-is-bankruptcy\/\"><strong>Browse more bankruptcy articles.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bankruptcy helps you resolve many kinds of unsecured debts, like personal loans or credit card debt.
