- In an emergency, call 911. And remove the individual from any life-threatening situations or environments.
- If you know about elder abuse, you can register a complaint with Adult Protective Services (APS). Call the number provided: 1-800-677-1116. When prompted, enter your 5-digit zip code to connect to the Adult
- Protective Services in your county. The hotline operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. You can report the complaint at any time.
- Document evidence. This may include bank statements, legal documents, suspicious transactions, police reports, or any other relevant records.
- Report the abuse. Contact local authorities, such as Adult Protective Services (APS) or the police, to report the financial abuse. Provide them with all the relevant information and evidence.
- Seek legal advice. Consult with an elder law attorney to understand the legal options available to address the situation.
- Preserve assets and accounts. Take steps to protect their financial assets. This may involve freezing accounts or changing passwords.
- Involve trusted individuals. Inform other family members, close friends, or trusted advisors about the situation.
