Elder abuse and neglect are both types of mistreatment but differ slightly.
Elder abuse
Elder abuse is a deliberate, intentional, and knowing action that the abuser knows will cause harm or risk to the vulnerable older adult. Abuse can occur in different forms, including physical, sexual, threats, and emotional harm. It also can involve exploitation of the vulnerable senior or violating that person’s rights. Some cases may also involve financial abuse or healthcare fraud.
Elder neglect
Elder neglect, however, typically involves a lack of action, resulting in the caretaker failing to fulfill obligations. Passive neglect may be unintentional, such as when a caregiver is overwhelmed or undertrained. But active neglect can involve intentionally disregarding the vulnerable adult’s needs.
