A litigation hold (also called a legal hold) is a process that helps preserve all data that may relate to a legal action or reasonably anticipated legal action involving an organization or individual.

The hold temporarily suspends an organization’s normal retention policies that pertain to data that may relate to the legal action.

This process prevents the destruction or alteration of relevant data to ensure that the information is available for the discovery process before litigation.
