If you suspect abuse, it’s important to take action immediately. Unfortunately, many older adults are hesitant or unable to report the abuse.
Call 911 if a senior is in immediate, life-threatening danger.
Otherwise, if you suspect abuse is currently occurring or has occurred, report the concern to the:
- Local Adult Protective Services (APS) for individuals who don’t live in a care facility or don’t have a home health provider
Police - Nursing home ombudsman, if the person is in a long-term care facility
- State’s department of health services for individuals living in a long-term care facility or relying on a home health provider
You can also consider filing a lawsuit to help pay for therapy, relocation costs, medical bills, or other losses the individual suffered due to the abuse.
You don’t need proof to file a report or to call the appropriate agency. When reporting your concerns, let them know your specific observations and reasons for your suspicion. If possible, include details such as time frames, dates of events, or any relevant documents (such as issues of financial exploitation or fraud).
