Understanding Driver’s License Options

There are two main types of driver’s licenses: noncommercial driver’s licenses (NCDLs) and commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs).

Noncommercial driver’s licenses

NCDLs are for drivers who operate vehicles for personal use, such as driving to work, school, or the store. NCDLs are divided into different classes, depending on the type of vehicle you are driving. The most common class of NCDL is Class C, which allows you to drive a passenger car, SUV, or pickup truck.

Other classes of NCDLs include:

  • Class B: Allows you to drive a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds, or a combination of vehicles with a GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds if the towed vehicle weighs less than 10,000 pounds.
  • Class M: Allows you to operate a motorcycle.

Commercial driver’s licenses

CDLs are required for drivers who operate commercial vehicles, such as trucks, buses, and tractor-trailers. CDLs are divided into three classes:

  • Class A CDL: Allows you to operate any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds, if the towed vehicle weighs more than 10,000 pounds.
  • Class B CDL: Allows you to operate any single vehicle with a GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds, or any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds if the towed vehicle weighs less than 10,000 pounds.
  • Class C CDL: Allows you to operate any single vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds that can transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or any hazardous materials.

Endorsements

In addition to the different classes of driver’s licenses, there are also endorsements. Endorsements are special qualifications that allow you to operate certain types of commercial vehicles or carry certain types of cargo. For example, a hazardous materials (H) endorsement allows you to transport hazardous materials. A passenger (P) endorsement allows you to operate a bus or other vehicle that carries more than 15 passengers.

Requirements for obtaining a driver’s license

The requirements for obtaining a driver’s license vary by state. However, most states require you to pass a written test and a road test. You may also need to complete a driver’s education course.

Renewing your driver’s license

Driver’s licenses must be renewed periodically. The renewal period varies by state. To renew your driver’s license, you will need to pay a fee and may need to pass a vision test.
